Youth Programs
There are many programs to get plugged into from the national level down to the local level. USEF, USDF provide national programs while the GMO’s provide the local level. Joining your local GMO helps get you plugged into what is happening in your state.
The new RYDR program is being designed to get the youth in the Region connected to what is happening ongoing with programs, scholarships, awards and more. We want to have it an interactive program so we can hear directly from the youth what they want to see available within the Region.
Youth Camps –For the last four years the USDF Region 6 Youth Dressage Overnight Camp hosted by ODS and held at DevonWood Equestrian Centre is a wonderful educational experience, dedicated to youth regardless of membership or experience in Dressage. This Camp will continue to be offered in the summer of 2014. The ODS Youth Programs Committee is the standing committee in charge of this Camp.
The NAJYRC –This program is specifically designed for youth who are riding 4th and/or PSG competitively. (NAJYRC) is the premier equestrian competition in North America for junior and young riders, age 14-21. Young equestrians come from the United States, Bermuda, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the Caribbean Islands to vie for team and individual FEI medals in the three Olympic equestrian disciplines of show jumping, dressage, eventing and the FEI World Equestrian Games disciplines of reining and endurance. The 2013 Region 6 team with Sadie Lahey, Molly Eastridge and Ayden Uhlir were very successful winning the Team Silver Medal and Ayden Uhlir winning two Gold Medals for the individual and Musical Freestyle events. We are currently looking to for new members to join both the Junior and Young Rider teams for 2014. For more information contact Jodi McMaster, [email protected].
The Young Rider Graduate Program – USDF is designed to help bridge the gap between young rider status and the professional world of international competition, teaching, training, and equine business management. The curriculum provides eligible participants information for a “seamless” transition from the ranks of a young rider to that of an adult amateur, professional, or high-performance equestrian. The Dressage Foundation is pleased to offer grants of up to $500 each to individual participants to attend the USDF Young Rider Graduate Program.
The USEF/USDF Dressage Seat Medal Program-USDF celebrates excellence in equitation and strives to develop a solid foundation for future success in the international dressage arena. Youth wishing to qualify for the USEF Dressage Seat Medal Finals must compete in the USDF Dressage Seat Medal Semi-Finals held at the Great American/USDF Regional Championships. To qualify, a competitor may earn a qualifying score of 70% or above in any open Dressage Seat Equitation class or by qualifying for the Great American/USDF Regional Championships. Riders placing in the top two in the Semi-Finals are automatically invited to the Finals.
Platinum Performance/USDF Jr/YR clinic series – USDF is designed to develop educational opportunities for riders ages 14-21 and to provide a necessary stepping stone in the youth pipeline by including a ‘talent search’ element. Riders will be coached by well-known and highly respected instructors including Jeremy Steinberg, George Williams, Jan Ebeling, and Sue Blinks. Participation in these clinics offers juniors and young riders the opportunity to learn from top U.S. riders. The clinics are open to eight riding participants and auditors of all ages; a theory session each day will be offered to all attendees.
Region 6 will be offering one of these clinic’s in Oregon in the Spring of 2015, more details to come.
The Emerging Dressage Athlete Program- Dressage4kids, Inc. is a program for dedicated, determined young dressage riders of all levels. The goal of the program is to find, to help to educate, and to develop talented youth to become the international riders and trainers of the future. The program organizes clinics in various parts of the US and from these clinics participants will be selected for national clinics. Top international coaches have also been asked to nominate riders they feel have special talent. Lendon Gray headlines the regional clinics, although other international riders/trainers may help so that many parts of the US will be covered. Once a youth completes this program there are other scholarship program that become available to them.
Region 6 is working to get enough riders to get this program in our region for 2014. Coordinator is Carol Jackson (503-949-0156 [email protected]).
The Youth Programs Advisory Subcommittee, - USDF is a committee made up of youth that provide input to the Youth Programs Committee.
